In the teaser for his Blue Note album Wild Man Dance (2015) we see saxophonist-flutist Charles Lloyd (Memphis, 1938) with some kind of upturned basket on his head, roaming through a forest. While doing so he declares esoteric pieces of wisdom. He did the same in the seventies, when he was deep into transcendental meditation. Pianist Michel Petrucciani lured him away from that, but Lloyd had already had an impressive career, starting out by trying the blues first and hanging around on the jazz and avant-garde scenes later. He has worked with Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley, among others. In the mid-sixties he started his own quartet that mixed oriental music with modal jazz. It led to performances in accredited rock venues. His LP Forest Flower (1966) sold millions of copies.
