Last year, pianist Chick Corea (1941) played at the North Sea Jazz Festival with fellow legend Herbie Hancock, but this time around the spotlight is only on him. Corea is a pianist with a colossal track record, winner of countless major music polls with a catalog of recordings that stretches on for pages. Many people know him from his time with Miles Davis followed by his career with his own groundbreaking groups, including Return To Forever. However, Corea has also recorded many acoustic, freer jazz albums such as Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968). In 2015 he released the double album Portraits, a tribute to jazz icons. In his 75th Birthday Celebration, the pianist pays homage to giants like Bill Evans, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and his former mentor, Miles Davis. Corea is performing his tribute with an all-star band consisting of trumpeter Wallace Roney, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Marcus Gilmore.
