For alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman (1968) performing with the Robin Nolan Trio is something different once again. As if he wasn’t busy enough with his New Cool Collective, touring with singer-pianist Daniel von Piekartz and featuring as a guest artist with Typhoon, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and the famous Dr. John, last year Herman entered the world of gypsy swing with guitarist Robin Nolan (1968). This was a long-cherished dream of the saxophonist and he had to practice a lot to achieve it because this music has very different requirements: “I had to learn how to improvise again.” At the end of 2015, Herman and Nolan released the EP Swing De Paris, which served as the basis for their tour. Guitarist Robin Nolan was born in Vietnam and he later travelled the world with his parents. His father introduced him to the guitar in Hong Kong and afterwards he studied in London.
