The compelling sound of big band jazz, the fiery temperament of Latin-American music and the virtuosity of eighteen prominent soloists; this is, in short, the Afro Latin Orchestra, conducted by the inspiring pianist-composer and bandleader Arturo O'Farrill. He epitomizes present-day Latin jazz and completely re-interprets the best work of legends like Tito Puente, Frank ‘Machito’ Grillo and, of course, his father, Chico O’Farrill. Born in Mexico this triple Grammy winner learned the music business in the bars of New York, where he was soon discovered by composer Carla Bley. For years he was a member of her big band, but later decided to go solo and since then he has played with jazz heroes like Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and Lester Bowie. O’Farrill, who is half Cuban, regularly plays and teaches in his father's country while he continues to conduct his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in the famous Birdland club every Sunday.
