Tales From The Unexpected is the fitting title of the album released last year by Italian pianist-composer Enrico Pieranunzi. He recorded it live in Gütersloh (Germany) together with French drummer André Ceccarelli and Dutch bassist Jasper Somsen. The album delivers what the title promises: a refreshing mix of pure musicality with surprising narrative twists or ‘improtales’, as the master pianist himself describes them. In his rich career, Pieranunzi has already released more than seventy albums and he is famous for his sublime capacity to blend jazz and classical music together in his playing. The 55-year-old maestro, who has played with Chet Baker and Lee Konitz, among others, is regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation. At the North Sea Jazz Festival he, Ceccarelli and Somsen will play pieces from his latest album. An absolute must-see show for fans of refined, exciting improvisation.
