The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (JOC) is definitely used to sharing the stage with giants of jazz. In the past, this all-round orchestra has played with Christian Scott, José James and Benny Golson. This time, it’s Dr. Lonnie Smith who will be giving a special show with the JOC. The American is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Hammond B3. Smith started out in the 1960s accompanying singer-guitarist George Benson and embarked on his solo career in 1967. The album I Didn’t Know What Time It Was, which the JOC recorded live with Smith during a performance at the Amsterdam Bimhuis, was released in April. American Dennis Mackrel has been this leading Dutch orchestra’s chief conductor since last November. He was previously leader of the famous Count Basie Orchestra and he has drummed for the likes of Clark Terry, Quincy Jones and Tony Bennett.
