How often do you hear a classical harp in a jazz composition? Not often. How often do you hear Latin rhythms coming from a harp? Seldom – unless you know Edmar Castaneda. Castaneda (1978) was born in Bogota, Colombia and relocated to New York in 1994. The harpist brings a wonderful mix of influences to his jazz and he doesn’t stop at innovations that fall under special experiments: Castaneda is busy truly revolutionizing the harp. He astounds audiences by using it as a powerful rhythm instrument making it suddenly logical within the jazz genre. Together with harp makers, he has designed a modern, improved version of the traditional Colombian harp. Castaneda’s instrument is a loom on which he weaves complex rhythmical tapestries. The nuances in his playing make you forget that you’re listening to an instrument that is very rarely used as a solo instrument in jazz.
