The term ‘melting pot’ is often used, too often perhaps, but it could hardly be more apt and audible than in Bixiga, a borough in the Brazilian metropolis São Paulo. The many cultures that co-exist peacefully here have created a colorful musical scene that also produced Bixiga 70. The number 70 is derived from the address where the band was born: the studio at Rua 13 de Maio 70. But the number also belongs to one of the great sources of inspiration of the ten-member band: Fela Kuti’s Afrika 70. On their eponymous debut album (2011) Bixiga 70 effortlessly blend candomblé, cumbia, carimbó and funk. Their ambition stretches far and wide; the Brazilians are looking to erase the boundaries between time and space. Those who undergo the instrumental fusion of African and Latin American rhythms are sure to forget both space and time.
