Sometimes the album of the year is already announced in the first month. This was the case with Malibu, the second album of singer-songwriter-rapper Anderson .Paak, released last January. In a groovy mix of seventies soul, R&B and hip hop combined with his warm voice the 30-year-old American takes the listener back in time without really sounding retro. For many music lovers this Californian artist seems to have appeared out of nothing, but .Paak's star has been rising for some time. In 2014 he released his debut Venice and collaborated on no less than six songs on Compton (2015), the Dr. Dre album. The son of a Korean mother and American father, .Paak has been compared textually with storyteller Kendrick Lamar, while his sexy funk seems to originate straight from Frank Ocean. Without a doubt he is one of the greatest soul promises for the coming years.
