The French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf (Beirut,1980) admires strong women. He makes this clear in his project Kalthoum, dedicated to the famous Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum, but on Red & Black Light he also pays tribute to a contemporary female superstar: Beyoncé. Maalouf released the album in 2015. It is dedicated to the women of today and includes a cover of a Beyoncé track. Red & Black Light is an ode to all women who help make the world a better place: “These women have inside them a strength and stability similar to a kind of unshakeable trance,” according to Maalouf. He builds up this project further using his own compositions, performed in a clearly modern way with more of an electro-pop feel than on Kalthoum. Although at their core the pieces are complex, the trumpeter wanted to keep the sound very clear and transparent – and he succeeded!
