Since she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010, it has been one rave review after another for singer Cécile McLorin Salvant. She has even been compared with illustrious legends like Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. McLorin Salvant surprises audiences with an intense and narrative way of singing. For her album ChildWoman (2013) the vocalist selected twelve obscure jazz songs that she transformed to the level of standards. The record received a Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album and the jazz authority DownBeat magazine selected McLorin Salvant in over four categories of the DownBeat Critics Poll. Her debut at North Sea Jazz in 2014 was a sensuous and bewildering performance that received wide acclaim. On her latest album For One To Love, for which she received a Grammy Award, McLorin Salvant impresses with songs by Bessie Smith and Blanche Calloway, as well as five of her own exciting songs.
