If Alice Coltrane was your great aunt, it’s virtually your duty to create groundbreaking sounds. Steven Ellison does just that – and more! Under the alias Flying Lotus he produces filmic, unearthly sounds sometimes accompanied by jittery beats. The Los Angeles-born talent started out in dubstep, but Ellison’s music defies genres. The experimental producer, DJ and rapper loves to skirt among a variety of styles. Other genre defying artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead are fans of his with good reason. Ellison’s fifth and most recent album, the trippy You’re Dead!, was released back in 2014. But new work is looming on the horizon: FlyLo recently shared a few new tracks on which he collaborated with jazz-fusion bass maestro Thundercat. Live, his musical experiments are heightened by breathtaking visuals with his shows taking place against a science-fiction-like backdrop. John and Alice Coltrane can look down with satisfaction.
