Kamasi Washington is a saxophonist, composer, bandleader and producer. His debut triple-album The Epic (2015) is an adventurous recording full of subtle influences from hip hop, R&B, Latin and African music and it was even included on the annual polls of mainstream music magazines like OOR. And yet this multi-talented artist who grew up in Los Angeles has a very real background in jazz. While still at high school he and bass player Thundercat formed the quartet the Young Jazz Giants and its members still play in his band today. Washington played for many years in Gerald Wilson’s big band where he learned the subtleties involved in arranging; skills which make his debut very special. He also made a significant contribution to Kendrick Lamar’s highly successful album To Pimp A Butterfly and has worked with giants like McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, NAS, Snoop Dogg and Flying Lotus who also owns the record company Brainfeeder that released Washington’s debut album.
