Guitarist Anton Goudsmit has played with Benjamin Herman and New Cool Collective, Eric Vloeimans, Ernst Reijseger, as well as with his band The Ploctones. In 2010 he was awarded the VPRO/Boy Edgar prize for his unparalleled playing. His dislike for convention makes him the perfect sparring partner for the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, since this authentic ensemble also likes to break down musical barriers. Their compositions contain wild escapades, elegant mid-tempo pieces and ripping individual solos; the twelve-member group always looks for inspirational musical challenges. The orchestra strives to: ‘raise some hell for ourselves and for Anton.’ That boundless energy was finally captured on a live album this year: New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra Meets Anton Goudsmit. This debut was immediately nominated for an Edison Jazz award and received a rave review in the Dutch morning paper de Volkskrant, in which Goudsmit was characterized as ‘one of our best, most adventurous jazz guitarists’.
