The essence of the European Union: Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva have been making music together in various groups since 2008. First in the European Movement Jazz Orchestra, later in KASU, Cows on Trees, and as a duo. In the latter lineup they were asked to participate in the 1 2 3 4 project, with performances by young independent jazz acts. It allowed Draksler and Santos Silva to further deepen their strange, sometimes avant-garde sound as a duo. They also have ties with the Netherlands: Draksler lives in Amsterdam; Santos Silva is a member of the Rotterdam group Lama, for example. They never seem to be able to sit still. Draksler, for one, has already recorded many albums, including The Lives Of Many Others (2013), while Santos Silva released Devil’s Dress with her quintet SSS5tet in 2011. Their debut album as a duo will be released on Clean Feed Records toward the end of 2015.
