Singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé (1987) grew up in Sunderland, north-east England, the child of a Zambian father and an English mother. She attended the same school her father taught at so she had no choice but to behave. Sandé started singing at an early age. She was awarded an intercalculated degree in neuroscience which was her backup plan in case a career in music didn’t pan out. She hasn’t had to use her degree yet. Sandé’s debut album Our Version Of Events (2012) was Number 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart for 10 weeks and was also the year’s biggest-selling album. A year later, she won two Brit Awards: Best British Female Solo Artist and Best British Album of the Year. Sandé names Nina Simone as one of her sources of inspiration.
