Their own slogan is ‘jazz meets flamenco’. With composer and arranger Bernard van Rossum as the leading man, The BvR Flamenco Big Band, a 21-piece jazz ensemble conceived around a core of flamenco protagonists, breathes new life into an old genre. Van Rossum, whose parents are from England and the Netherlands, grew up in Spain. He studied at conservatories in Barcelona, Denton in Texas and Amsterdam. This year the band released their debut album Jaleo Holandés. Van Rossum’s colorful arrangements allow a lot of room for improvisation and provide the ideal ingredients for a live show. In his compositions, the flamenco element is taken to the next level through colorful orchestration and the dynamic range of the big band. Last year The BvR Flamenco Big Band won the first prize at the Meerjazz International Big Band Competition and van Rossum himself was granted the award for best soloist. The orchestra stays close to the roots of flamenco but adds contemporary elements. It’s what makes The BvR Flamenco Big Band such an exciting live act.
