There is no better title for a debut recording than As The Journey Begins. This theme is important on the album that pianist Sebastiaan van Bavel (yes, he is the son of jazz pianist Rob van Bavel) released, together with bassist Maciej Domaradzki and drummer Remi Troost in 2014. However, van Bavel did not take the easy road; the album was an ambitious undertaking. On it you can hear his dual background as a classically trained pianist and jazzman. The pianist presents eight of his compositions that are linked together thematically. His trio received the prestigious Dutch prize Edison Jazz Nationaal 2014 for it. Van Bavel, who won the 2008 Prinses Christina Concours in the category Jazz in 2008 and three years later in the category Classical, can evoke a wide array of emotions, followed by sharp rocky passages. He convincingly blends various genres. A new star has risen among Dutch jazz pianists.
