Trumpeter and flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen was born in 1930 but his playing is ageless. Van Rooyen graduated with the distinction cum laude from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he now teaches. He has garnered success at home and abroad. In 2007 he received the Singer Laren Jazz Award for his entire oeuvre. This year, the jazz legend is celebrating his 85th birthday with a quintet made up of younger Dutch jazz musicians whom he has inspired. In 2014 they released the album To The Ends Of The Earth. Pianist Marc van Roon plays with the Tineke Postma Quartet and Michael Moore’s quintet, among others. At an early age saxophonist Jeroen Manders was captivated by Louis Amstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Bassist Erik Robaard has a keen awareness of Van Rooyen’s approach as does drummer Wim Kegel, who played with Pat Metheny at North Sea Jazz in 2004.
