Last year, American soul singer Candi Staton released Life Happens, an impressive album about a relationship from beginning to end. A striking theme for an album that received critical acclaim. And the variety of Staton’s sources of inspiration is equally striking. Life Happens is bursting with country rock, blues, funk and soul. Staton, who grew up on gospel, gained fame in the early seventies with the soul songs she recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. She was raised in a religious, working-class family in Alabama and quickly earned the title 'First Lady of Southern Soul'. In 1976 she became a ‘disco queen’ thanks to the worldwide hit Young Hearts Run Free. The fire has kept on burning since then: Staton is still very active and younger generations know her in particular for the hit You Got The Love which has been reworked in many dance numbers.
