Amsterdam’s night life is dominated by electronic dance music and amplified live bands. Gallowstreet wanted to do the opposite and show people – and let them hear – that you can have a fantastic party with nothing but acoustic instruments. The ten-piece ensemble consists of drums, percussion and most importantly a horn section. The full name of the band is the Gallowstreet Brass Band. That brings to mind the sound of New Orleans brass music which the dectet does play, but Gallowstreet just as easily raise the roof with infectious covers of hip hop and house music. Their version of TNGHT's Higher Ground has already been viewed thousands of times on YouTube. The band is a true crowd pleaser, born on the streets – the Galgenstraat in Amsterdam, to be precise, which translates into their name (Galgen means gallows). The band built up its reputation in parades and at community gatherings, surrounded by people. Today you can also see them at leading festivals like P!tch and Eurosonic.
