The fact that drummer Otis Brown III became a musician is hardly surprising. His father performed with James Brown and Al Green, and his mother was a classically trained pianist and choral conductor. Brown studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute in New York. He was first noticed there by Joe Lovano who drafted him for his US Five quintet, in which Esperanza Spalding played bass. She hired Brown for her debut album Junjo. But the drummer wanted to be more than an accompanist. With The Thought Of You Brown made his solo debut in 2014 with Revive/Blue Note. On this album he was accompanied by masters like Robert Glasper, Bilal and Gretchen Parlato. Besides his own compositions, there were also some noteworthy covers on the album; Shania Twain’s You’re Still The One was given a complete makeover. An ambitious album filled with warmth and spirituality.
