Jazz fans lovingly call him ‘the new Benjamin Herman’. Quite an honor for the alto saxophonist who is only 29. But Maarten Hogenhuis has been working hard on both the Dutch and the international music scenes. The Amsterdam-based front man of power-jazz formation BRUUT! also plays in Reinier Baas’s The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble and leads a quartet and a trio. In 2013 Hogenhuis and this trio won the prestigious Keep An Eye International Jazz Award and he also won the prize for Best Soloist. The threesome’s repertoire mainly consists of original compositions and fresh swing-bop versions of standards from the Great American Songbook. Hogenhuis is a saxophonist with soul and a profound style that gets under your skin. His playing is agile, passionate and shows he has a lot of fun, both on his debut 4/3 (2014) and in a live setting. Just as jazz should be.
