He has been called soul music’s brightest rising star. A heavy load for young shoulders to carry but if you’ve heard his self-titled debut album (2014), you know why he is so lauded. Whether he sings quiet ballads or brings audiences to their feet with a complete band and funky grooves, Jarrod Lawson effortlessly navigates from style to style with his staggering vocal range and virtuoso piano playing. Above all, this super talent brings the soul of past decades to life. From Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye to D’Angelo: Lawson pays them tribute without imitating them.
His multi-faceted music has its roots in his studies at the prestigious Clackamas Community College, where he learned to appreciate numerous music genres and artists. Lawson’s career rocketed after he left college. He shared the stage with acts like Bilal, Average White Band and Maceo Parker. The icing on the cake was playing at his idol Stevie Wonder’s birthday celebrations.
