One career simply isn’t enough for some people. Dominic J Marshall describes himself as a pianist, composer and beatmaker. He has recorded jazz albums with his trio and has also released several recordings of self-produced beats under the name DJM. Currently based in Amsterdam, the talented young Englishman studied at that city’s conservatory. It was there that he met bassist Tobias Nijboer and drummer Jamie Peet. They share a predilection for improvisation and a wide array of influences ranging from jazz to classical music, hip hop, soul, folk – and everything in between. ‘Proud of his influences but never overwhelmed by them,’ wrote Bruce Lindsay of All About Jazz about Marshall’s third album Spirit Speech. The album was released last spring and was nominated for an Edison in the International Jazz category. And it’s not just the media that praise him; according to Jamie Cullum: ‘He brings together a great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new’.
