Vocalist Lizz Wright has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival many times before, and each time she has surprised us. She grew up in a small town in Georgia where she learned to sing in church. Later she studied classical singing at Atlanta State University. On her debut album, Salt, from 2003, Wright made an impression as a soul singer. Following that she developed into a singer-songwriter and her second album, Dreaming Wide Awake, was drenched in folk and country influences. With The Orchard she took her listeners to places from her childhood in Georgia, and her latest album, Fellowship, from 2010, was a gospel record. So it will be exciting to see which musical turn the singer will take this time. In the end it won’t really matter, because with her deep, resonant voice and powerful songs, Lizz Wright always impresses.
