Leading music magazine Rolling Stone named their debut single Hold On the best song of 2012. For the American quartet Alabama Shakes, that turned out to be a sign of many more good things to come for. The band from Athens, Georgia plays razor-edged blues rock. Their captivating songs seem to come straight out of a garage in Memphis and are carried by the Janis Joplin-like voice of their very impressive front woman Brittany Howard. The first Alabama Shakes album Boys & Girls (2012) received no fewer than three Grammy nominations. The follow-up album Sound & Color was released recently and the band has set the creative bar even higher. Alongside their trusted, bluesy garage rock Alabama Shakes is now using elements of soul, psychedelia, funk and even electro. If you are a fan of raw roots music with a subtle touch, don’t miss this act at North Sea Jazz.
