There’s never a dull moment with bassist Avishai Cohen (Israel, 1970). Cohen, whom Downbeat has called ‘a jazz visionary of global proportions’, is not just a bassist and composer: he also uses his voice in his energetic and subtle music. His career changed dramatically in 1997 when he joined Chick Corea’s band. After a wide range of projects with Sephardic music, a string quartet and a blend of jazz and traditional Middle-Eastern music, Cohen is coming to North Sea Jazz with a transatlantic sextet. The lineup is of the highest caliber and includes old friends from the New York jazz scene: brilliant guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, trumpeter Diego Urcola (nominated three times for a Grammy!) and master improviser and trombonist Steve Davis. The sextet is completed by the musicians with whom Cohen recently recorded the album From Darkness (Razdaz Records), pianist Nitai Hershkovits and drummer Daniel Dor.
