It had to happen someday: Cassandra Wilson pays homage to Billie Holiday. Sony Legacy released the already much-talked-about tribute album Coming Forth By Day on April 7, the centenary of Holiday’s birth. Wilson singing Holiday could be called a match made in heaven. Both singers are known for their distinctive voice and the way in which they pour their heart and soul into their music. Wilson has released no fewer than 19 solo albums since her debut recording Point Of View in 1986. She mainly sings jazz but you can hear the influence of soul, pop, blues, country and folk on her albums. Along the way she has won several Grammys. Once again, her latest project is attracting attention. Coming Forth By Day was produced by Nick Launay, known for his work with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, among others. Several members of the latter play on the album, and Van Dyke Parks wrote the string arrangements.
