A man wearing a slightly oversized hat and his glasses askew on his nose:
Allen Stone looks a bit nerdy. But his music sounds like classical soul from the sixties and seventies. He combines that soul with folk influences and his songs often contain a message for society. It’s not for nothing that is music was compared by
The New York Times to the socially engaged soul of Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. As a young boy, Stone heard a lot of gospel, but when he was a teenager he became interested in more wordly soul. In 2011 he launched his album
Allen Stone on his own label. Since that time his melodious sound could be heard on many talkshows, and of course many stages. North Sea Jazz visitors will be able to enjoy Stone’s latest material: his new album is due to be released later this year.
