In Surinam, you can hear the sound of classic Caribbean rhythms on every street corner. The country lives and breathes music. The authentic style and exotic charm of the music of the former Dutch colony is extremely popular in the Netherlands as well. Kees de Koning, founder of the Top Notch label, took advantage of this last year when he released the first of the Sranan Gowtu series of albums. This collection of recordings is a tribute to the rich music history of Surinam. The album will be brought to life at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Sranan Gowtu contains current and former members of the band Trafassi with guest appearances by Kenny B, Oscar Harris, Typhoon, Louis Windzak, Damaru and Fit. You will hear classics like Blaka Rosoe by Lieve Hugo as well as new tracks such as Bumaye by Typhoon, inspired by the music of Surinam.
