The versatile
Artvark Saxophone Quartet is one of Europe’s most original saxophone quartets. Bart Wirtz (alto), Rolf Delfos (alto), Peter Broekhuizen (baritone) and Mete Erker (tenor) are all internationally seasoned performers and bring together their various backgrounds creating a balanced but mostly original sound. Artvark criss-crosses musical traditions, during which the foursome touches, smells, growls and wheezes. Because of their versatility the group plays in people’s homes as well as at large festivals, and they collaborate with opposites like the Danish rockers from Efterklang and the classical soprano Claron McFadden. Artvark, celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2014, released their fifth album
Bluesstories last year and toured Dutch venues with actor John Buijsman. At North Sea Jazz the unpredictable quartet will have some surprises up their sleeves. For lovers of astoundingly tight playing, with groove and guts, Artvark is a must-see this edition.
