Alto and soprano saxophonist
Kenny Garrett released his seventeenth album as a bandleader in September of last year:
Pushing The World Away. A daunting number but the albums Garrett (1960) has made with other greats also form an impressive list. For many jazz fans, the saxophonist is mainly associated with Miles Davis, with whom he played for five years during Davis’ electric period. He recorded the album
Amandla (1989), among others, with Davis. In the nineties, Garrett began to develop further and further as an individual artist, with the group Out of the Blue, for example. Garret has also definitely been successful in recent years. Last year he was chosen Best Alto Saxophonist in the DownBeat Readers’ Poll and his new album
Pushing The World Away was nominated for a Grammy. This album also contains the repertoire he performs with his quintet (in which pianist Vernell Brown plays a big role) at large jazz festivals.
