Standing on the riverside with your feet in the mud. That’s the feeling the
Riverside Quartet, formed in 2012, wants to convey. Music with a laid-back and organic quality; a mix of improv, bluegrass, sacred hymns and other influences. Saxophonist Chet Doxas who came up with the idea was intrigued by the sophisticated ensembles of versatile reed instrument player Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008). Several years ago, Doxas shared his thoughts with trumpeter Dave Douglas who had done a number of projects with a similar character. Giuffre’s music was intended to release a creative spark and Riverside definitely did not mean to perform a string of lazy tribute concerts. Alongside Douglas and Doxas, you can hear top bassist Steve Swallow (a former member of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio, which at that time was performing an accessible form of free jazz) and drummer Jim Doxas,
who like his brother Chet, comes from Montreal.
