Alfred Lion and Francis Wolf founded the famous Blue Note record label 75 years ago. Throughout its long history, the label has always managed to be at the cutting edge of jazz and the North Sea Jazz Festival puts focus on this milestone anniversary with a special concert. Pianist and bandleader Jason Moran (1975) is the focal point in a special ‘Blue Note All Star Band’ that celebrates this anniversary in style. The band includes tenor saxophonist Benny Golson (1929), who was the musical leader of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1958. The Blue Note album Moanin’ (on which Golson played a major role) was a huge success among the hip youth of the time. Young guests like trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, pianist Robert Glasper and bassist Derrick Hodge will conjure up the spirit of Blue Note in a contemporary way. Jason Moran has also been able to get organist Dr. Lonnie Smith to join the party. Compared to Benny Golson, Smith (1942) is just a youth but he is nonetheless a legendary jazz and soul veteran.
