Bootsy Collins is a popular guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival. And rightly so, because wherever the flamboyant bassist performs, his wicked funk and slick R&B take the audience into another dimension. After all, the man learned his craft from perhaps the greatest entertainer ever: James Brown. After his time in the backing band of ‘The Godfather of Soul’, Collins, whose recordings include
Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine (1970) played with George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic. Since the mid-seventies he has been the leader of his own band, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, which has been responsible for many funk classics. The now 62-year-old funk god is known for his many alter egos, star-shaped bass and colorful outfits. This year he is bringing the 13-piece Funk Unity Band to Ahoy. Be prepared for a performance bursting with grooves, plucked bass lines, sweat and, above all, masterly funk.
