Throughout his long career, American multi-instrumentalist
Henry Threadgill has always pushed past boundaries. He consciously chooses adventure and has been a member of many groups over the years.
Zooid is the name of the quintet with whom the bold 70-year-old musician has been adventuring since 2001. Threadgill plays alto saxophone in Zooid, as well as flute and bass flute. The other four play guitar, cello, tuba, trombone, drums and percussion. An unusual lineup in which blues, gospel, jazz and folk are blended together into a rare and fascinating cocktail. Threadgill has been at the vanguard of free jazz and avant-garde music for decades as both a composer and bandleader. He is a giant on the progressive jazz scene due to his unique albums on which he blends all kinds of different influences from different countries. But he is especially known for his thrilling live shows. North Sea Jazz can expect something fantastic.
