Koffie (‘Coffee’) isn’t just the Dutch word for a popular beverage: since last summer it has also been representing a sound. This Amsterdam-based band plays instrumental music that has its roots far from the Dutch capital in the afrobeat music of Fela Kuti and the Ghanaian funk of Ebo Taylor. Koffie once again proves that exotic things are wonderful – especially in a special blend. The drummer, guitarist and bassist all come from the pop music scene, while the saxophonist, keyboard player and percussionist are from the jazz scene. The result is an infectious mix of influences that will hook you straight away. It’s little wonder that the gentlemen are popular summer guests at both pop and jazz festivals. The sextet has already released two albums, the most recent of which,
Éh Lady, was recorded in Ebo Taylor’s studio in Berlin. The group is currently hard at work on their third album.
