Music that sounds like everything and is yet completely unique. The music of
Kapok might best be described in those words. In any case, these three young men from Utrecht would take it as a true compliment. Morris Kliphuis (French horn), Timon Koomen (guitar) and Remco Menting (percussion) combine free jazz, pop, funk, roots, classical music and even indie rock to create music that is abstract, energetic and sometimes confusing but is always truly original. Musical freedom and improvisation are very important to the trio. Kapok clearly comes from trumpeter Colin Benders’ Kytopia laboratory where no artistic restrictions apply. The debut album
Flatlands (2012) was recorded in that creative free state, but the band chose to record its successor,
Kapok (2014), in a 13
th century castle – due to the unique acoustics. At the North Sea Jazz Festival the trio will explore the creative boundaries of jazz and undoubtedly win over a lot of fans of other genres.
