Pianist
Brad Mehldau and drummer
Mark Guiliana are both among the very best of American jazz musicians. Now, they have joined forces under the name Mehliana. Their joint debut album
Taming The Dragon was released in February and is clearly one of the most groundbreaking collaborations of 2014. On the album, with Mehldau playing synthesizer, piano and Fender Rhodes and Guiliana on drums and electronics, the duo defy the genres of jazz. The result is original, largely because in recent years, the pair have extensively tried out the repertoire of
Taming The Dragon during their concerts. And it is when performing live that this duo does itself true justice: Mehldau encircles himself with numerous instruments on stage – often playing two at once – while at the drums, Guiliana sits facing Mehldau and tirelessly provides razor-sharp, unconventional rhythms.
