Many have noticed bassist-composer-producer
Derrick Hodge as the cornerstone of The Robert Glasper Experiment, including on the album
Black Radio. He also played a major role in the group of trumpeter Terence Blanchard, for whom he wrote, among other things, music for the Grammy-Award winning album
A Tale Of God’s Will (A Requiem For Katrina). In 2013, Hodge (Philadelphia,1979) made his debut as a bandleader on the famous Blue Note label. On that album,
Live Today, he closes the gap between modern jazz, hip hop, R&B, gospel and folk music. Derrick Hodge began playing guitar while at school and now plays acoustic and electric bass with equal ease. He has also garnered fame as a composer of film scores. Hip hop artists like Mos Def, Q-Tip and Kanye West are eager to make use of his talents. At the North Sea Jazz Festival Hodge is playing with a quartet that includes two keyboard players, Federico Pena and Michael Aaberg, as well as drummer Michael Mitchell.
