New Orleans is the funkiest city on earth and
Galactic is the jazz and funk jam band that has held sway there since the early nineties. Galactic now pays tribute to the city and its world famous Mardi Gras on the album
Carnivale Electricos, on which they touch everything that has conceivably influenced the event, from the spiritual ‘Mardi Gras Indians’ to the music of brass bands and indigenous Brazilian carnival music. The band thus moves from the music of New Orleans straight through to the Caribbean and on to Brazil. Galactic was formed in 1994 and in fact took over the baton from The Neville Brothers and The Meters as the leading funk group of ‘The Big Easy’, as the city is known. On their latest album they make use of their deep roots as well as undiluted hip hop. With Galactic, the North Sea Jazz Festival will have its own Rotterdam summer funk carnival.
