There are few female vocalists with an old-fashioned sound like that of American singer Valerie June. When this country girl from Tennessee starts singing, visions of long-lost times immediately surface: images of the prohibition era in the US and of the time before segregation was abolished. June's striking sound is built on the blues and the soul from that era, but a genre like bluegrass is also a source of inspiration for this Southern belle. The sum total of these impressive musical elements can be heard at North Sea Jazz and on her debut album Pushin' Against A Stone, that she recorded in Nashville.
