After Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez moved from Mexico City to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music, he was quickly discovered. Guitarist Pat Metheny took him into his band as his permanent drummer and let him debut on the masterpiece Speaking Of Now. Sanchez has also worked with greats like Chick Corea, Charlie Haden and Toots Thielemans. The late saxophonist Michael Brecker referred to him as the best drummer he had ever played with. Sanchez's unique swing and improvisational style ultimately led to more. In 2007, assisted by musical friends like Metheny and Corea, he released his first solo album entitled Migration. The album and its follow-up Live In New York were both highly acclaimed by the international jazz media. His recent new album, New Life, was recorded with saxophonist David Binney, bassist Matt Brewer and pianist John Escreet and it is this lineup that Sanchez is bringing to the festival.
