Has there ever been a more adventurous orchestra than ICP? It's hard to imagine - especially if you've listened to the recently released historic box: Complete Boxed Catalogue(Challenge/ICP) of the Instant Composers Pool. ICP did not come up with the term "instant composing" recently; it was actually guitarist Jim Hall who first used the word, back in 1958. Several years later, pianist Misha Mengelberg also used the term to describe free improvisation. ICP was formed in 1967 through the efforts of Mengelberg, drummer Han Bennink and saxophonist Willem Breuker. Breuker left ICP in 1974 and the ICP Tentet, from which today's orchestra grew, was formed later. Mature, but without any tired routines: no two performances are the same. The presence of guests (like pianist Guus Janssen and multi-instrumentalist Steve Beresford) guarantees a show full of surprises and detours.
