This year Frisian singer NYNKE, born as Nynke Laverman, took an unusual step in her already exciting career in which she performs fado music in Frisian. She recently spent time in the Spanish capital Madrid to record her new album with both Frisian and Spanish musicians. The result, Alter, is not to be missed. Although she sings in Frisian on Alter, the overriding influence is Southern European. This is due to the Mediterranean input of Spain's famous producer and flamenco guitarist Javier Limón, who, in his own words, fell in love with the extremely melodious Frisian language. According to Nynke, collaborating with this Grammy Award-winner made Alter, which Nynke describes as a "kind of hymn to spring, to love, to birth, to nature, and to the moods and feelings elicited by those peculiar, broad Frisian landscapes", a very special album.
