The sound of Calexico has always blown across the arid plains of Arizona and Mexico, but for their seventh album they went to a city: New Orleans. It's always a good idea to record there, but it seemed a remarkable choice for Calexico. On the other hand, you can't get any closer to the Caribbean while on the mainland, and the band had always been drawn to Latin sounds. The collective seems to have incorporated into its music every genre it has encountered - even Portuguese fado and surf music. The atmosphere on the album Algiers is never far from that of spaghetti westerns, but there are also traces of New Orleans: old-style jazz laced with funk. Calexico is clearly at home with swinging rhythms that shift from relaxed and easy to dance music.
