Israel's Avishai Cohen is arguably the most acclaimed jazz bassist of the past fifteen years. He has built up an impressive oeuvre in a very short space of time. Cohen was discovered in 1997 when Chick Corea listened to a demo tape with tracks by him. Based on what he heard, the pianist wanted to add Cohen to his trio. And the rest is history. The bassist's 2003 debut album Lyla was well received. From then on, Cohen's output has been considerable. In the space of five years, he released four albums which received nothing but high praise. Cohen also remained extremely productive after his return to Israel in 2005. He recently released the album Duende which he recorded with pianist and fellow countryman Nitai Hershkovits who is a member of Cohen's quartet at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
