Philadelphia hip hop neo-soul band The Roots was founded in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. The band became famous for their jazzy approach to hip hop, using live instruments. Besides making their own albums, The Roots are known for their frequent collaborations with artists like Jay-Z, John Legend and Betty Wright, with whom they released the album Betty Wright: The Movie in 2011. In their long existence they have been frequently nominated for and awarded Grammys and other awards. Well-known hit singles include 2003's The Seed (2.0), featuring Cody ChestnuTT, and 2010's Wake Up Everybody with John Legend, Common and Melanie Fiona. Since 2009 The Roots has been the house band of the popular late night show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon; their latest album Undun came out in 2011.
