Trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf was born in Beirut in 1980. As a child, his parents fled the civil war in Lebanon, taking him and his sister to live on the outskirts of Paris. Maalouf comes from a musical and intellectual family: his father is trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and the writer Amin Maalouf is his uncle. Maalouf's latest album, Wind, is the result of a special project. The Cinémathique français asked him to compose a score for one of the silent films in its collection. Maalouf chose La Proie Du Vent/The Prey Of The Wind (René Clair, 1927). He took as his model the iconic Miles Davis score for the 1957 thriller Ascenseur Pour l'Échafaud. Mysterious melancholy oozing suspense, that was what Maalouf wanted to create - and he succeeded. The subtle references to Arabic music are typical of Maalouf. He recorded Wind in New York with top American musicians who complement him perfectly.
